Matthew 1997 – Eve of departure
A limited edition print, celebrating the eve of departure of the replica Matthew. The scene is set with the ship moored in front of the Lloyds building in Bristol’s floating docks, awaiting departure for the recreation of John Cabot’s pioneering journey of discovery to the Americas 500 years earlier. Leaving Bristol in 1497 and sailing west, he had hoped to find a shorter route to Asia. After a month at sea, he discovered unknown land, which he called ‘Newfound land’.
